Can Reiki Be Done Virtually? What is Distance Reiki?
Reiki is a healing technique originating in Japan. It means “spiritual energy” and this “Ki,” or energy, is a part of every living thing.
People often ask can Reiki be done virtually and the answer is yes! Distance Reiki is a specific technique that originated in the 1920s with Master Usui, the founder of the system of Reiki healing.
Distance Reiki (also known as Virtual Reiki, Online Reiki, or Absentee Reiki) is a technique that allows the practitioner to offer a Reiki session without the client being in the same room or geographic location. In other words, the practitioner is able to transmit Reiki (otherwise known as spiritual energy, Qi, or prana) beyond physical touch.
Deborah serves clients from all over the world, and has offered online Reiki healing since she created her energy healing practice & Distance Reiki business in 2008. Virtual Reiki sessions are ideal in terms of flexibility, allowing you to experience a session in the comfort of your own home or office.
How Does Reiki Work?
During a virtual Reiki session, Deborah acts as a channel for the Reiki (or Ki) to move through, clearing and strengthening the meridians and energy throughout your body according to what you need. There’s no difference in the effectiveness between in-person and online Reiki healing (other than being able to relax in the comfort of your own home). How Does Distance Reiki Work?
While we often forget this, we are all interconnected. In this way, you can receive energy healing regardless of time and space. You can reflect on this interconnectedness at the beginning of your session. This reflection can be a helpful reminder for the linear, analytical mind, which sees everything as separate. Virtual Reiki is similar to the oneness state achieved through meditation.
Deborah senses the Reiki energy in different places in the body similar to an in-person treatment. You will likely experience similar sensations to an in-person Reiki session, and the benefits are the same. Here’s an in-depth exploration of the question can Reiki be done virtually: Distance Reiki: The Beginner’s Guide to Distance Healing.
What Should I Expect?
While everyone experiences virtual Reiki differently, people often experience a feeling of relaxation, a sense of peace, and a deeper connection to their intuition. Sometimes people notice their mind calming down. You might feel quite alert and aware during the online Reiki healing, or you might drift off.
You might also notice physical sensations such as warmth, tingling, or an alleviation of physical symptoms. There’s no right or wrong way to experience Reiki, and it varies from person to person and from session to session.
What are the Potential Benefits of Reiki?
Online Reiki healing can be helpful for a wide range of physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual issues, as well as with relationship and career challenges.
Potential benefits of Reiki:
- Enhance your body’s ability to heal itself
- Relieve pain and physical discomfort
- Help you ground and center yourself, often compared to the experience of meditation
- Ease anxiety and depression
- Improve sleep
- Balance mood and your emotions
How Can Distance Reiki Help Me?
Stress is attributed to 85% of all health challenges. Many clients find virtual Reiki effective for reducing stress surrounding a range of issues including, but not limited to:
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
While everyone changes differently, 3 sessions is a good starting point to determine if Reiki is helpful with a particular issue. As with any physical, mental, or emotional challenge, chronic issues usually take longer than acute issues to resolve. Deborah offers a personalized recommendation after your first virtual Reiki session so you can devise a treatment plan together to best meet your needs. Many clients book a monthly session as a powerful and gentle form of self-care.
What Should I Do To Prepare For My Distance Reiki Session?
At the beginning of the session, you’ll have a brief consultation with Deborah about what you want the session to support. If it’s your first session, you’ll go over the Intake Form. Sometimes she’ll offer recommendations or show you self-healing techniques you can use between sessions to prolong the effects of the work you do together.
After the verbal consultation, you can comfortably lie down. It’s not necessary for Deborah to see you, so you can turn your camera off if you prefer. Alternately, you can do the entire session by phone if you live in the U.S., just let her know your preference in advance of your session.
The virtual Reiki session format offers the opportunity for Deborah to integrate much more into the Reiki sessions in a way that she wasn’t able to in person. These bonuses include offering Tao Hands soul healing and verbally guiding you through a progressive relaxation or hypnotic meditation.
Many clients prefer guided verbal support as it gives the mind something to focus on, while others prefer to relax quietly in silence during the session. Make sure you have head phones handy if needed. Deborah will give you these options at the beginning of the treatment so she can best personalize your virtual Reiki sessions to support you.
What Can I Do To Maximize The Effects Of My Virtual Reiki Session?
While it’s not necessary for your session, if you like you can create a healing space for yourself by:
- Meditating or offering a prayer beforehand
- Setting your intention to heal yourself
- Lighting a candle
- Playing relaxing music
- Journaling about what you want from the session in advance, or about what you notice after
At the end of the online Reiki healing, take a few minutes (longer if you like) to integrate everything from the session, taking a few deep breaths and sitting up slowly. (Bonus: take a nap if you can, we process so much when we sleep, so this can be quite powerful.) Listen to your body and rest and move accordingly.
Deborah also follows up with you after your session by email with recommendations of things to do and notice to help you prolong the positive effects of your virtual Reiki session.
