I recently did a reflexology segment for the Lisa Oz Show. She’s a big fan of reflexology. The aim of her show is to empower others to live well. I can get on board with that wholeheartedly!

I talked with Lisa about things you can do at home to find balance and achieve wellness, including a 5-minute reflexology routine you can do to alleviate allergies and congestion, PMS and hot flashes, and stress.

The Shocking Truth About Getting Pregnant

I recently read an article by Jean Twenge in The Atlantic about how long women can wait to get pregnant.

Over the years, I’ve worked with a lot of women dealing with fertility issues. Among the myriad stressors they deal with, is hearing that they’re at risk because of their age and their chances of becoming pregnant are low.

In the article, Twenge says the decline in fertility over the course of a woman’s 30s has been vastly oversold, and she takes a look at the statistics.

I found it particularly fascinating because it’s a great example of hypnosis, or trance, in action.

We’re in and out of trance all the time (think of how you act when you get in an elevator, or when you get lost in a book, or when you’re in the zone during a run), but sometimes we get stuck in a negative trance.

Unfortunately, the media, doctors, and chat rooms are often great at putting us in a negative trance.

While Twenge was initially panicked over the articles she was reading in the media about age and fertility, she decided to dig deeper. She’s a psychology researcher and knew that many scientific findings differ significantly from what the public hears about them. Here’s an excerpt from her article:

The widely cited statistic that 1 in 3 women ages 35-39 will not be pregnant after a year of trying, is based on an article published in 2004 in Human Reproduction. Rarely mentioned is the source of the date: French birth records from 1670-1830…In other words, millions of women are being told when to get pregnant based on statistics from a time before electricity, antibiotics, or fertility treatment.

Pretty shocking, right?

Twenge goes on to cite a study of modern women, which found the difference in pregnancy rates at age 28 versus 37 is only 4 percentage points. Another study concluded that the typical woman was able to get pregnant until somewhere between ages 40 and 45.

How Hypnosis, Reiki & Reflexology Can Help

It’s easy to internalize fears and misinformation from the media, our doctors, and other “experts.”

Sometimes this results in tension in our bodies, sometimes this results in worried or negative thoughts racing around in our heads. Or sometimes it’s both!

Regardless, none of these things are going to help you get pregnant.

Hypnosis, Reiki, and Reflexology are all great at helping with fertility in 3 ways:

1. Softening those fears
2. Putting things in perspective by helping you connect with yourself
(I truly believe you are your own best “expert” and know what’s best for you.)
3. Interrupting stress
(which is the #1 factor in all illness and imbalance in the body, including fertility issues.)

Which Is Most Effective?

I often get asked this question and it’s a good one. And my answer is….

It depends. (Refer to point #2 above!)

I always say, start with what resonates with you. I’ve had many clients get pregnant using Hypnosis, Reiki, and Reflexology separately, in combination, or in combination with other Western and holistic therapies and treatments.

There’s no one way because everyone is different, but one of my favorite things to do (and the whole reason I got into this work) is to help you connect to yourself, gain perspective, and figure out what’s best for you.

To give you a snapshot of how each works (and of course there’s overlap):

Hypnosis enables you to take charge and be more in control of your mind/body, improving its functioning through your own powers. It amplifies communication from your intuition, which is part of your unconscious mind. If you’re really “in your head,” this can be a good way to go, especially since you learn self-hypnosis techniques to change what’s in your head in a moment of stress (and when I’m not around!).

Reiki is all about feeling at peace, at ease in your mind and body. It’s working with the meridians and energy pathways in the body (similar to acupuncture). I often refer to Reiki as a way to get the “big picture” and heal in ways the linear mind can’t quite grasp. Because when it comes right down to it, the really interesting stuff in life is not within the realm of the linear mind–e.g. falling in love, being inspired by great works of art, or hey, wanting to have a baby!

Reflexology promotes balance and normalization of the body’s functions, and improves circulation and delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all the cells in the body. It’s more focused on the logistics and systems of the physical body: kind of like getting a tune-up for your car!

Many teachers in many different spiritual traditions talk about the idea that there are many rivers leading to the same ocean. There are so many ways to find true health and balance (and get pregnant!) Find what works for you. I’m here to help.

Does Hypnosis Wear Off?

Good question, right?

I had a new client tell me that the effects of hypnosis wear off. He was very matter-of-fact about it but it surprised me.

It surprised me mostly because I added hypnosis to my practice because I’ve found it so effective at helping people (including me!) make lasting positive changes. In fact, I told him I wouldn’t use it in my practice if it didn’t.

But he does bring up a good point.

Every now and then I’ll see a client who felt the effects of hypnosis work for a while, but then after a few months or so, it didn’t. For example, one client quit smoking for 6 months but then went back to it.

There’s a very good reason for this: secondary gain.

Secondary gain is a medical term that means a person has a hidden reason (often unconscious) for holding onto a negative behavior or condition.

An example: I had a client who came to me to quit smoking. She became a nonsmoker for 6 months and then went back to it. She thought the reason she started smoking again was because it was a way for her to relax, socialize with friends, and manage her stress. We did a hypnosis technique and she was surprised to realize smoking connected her to her mother who had passed away. Her mother had been a chain smoker for most her life and when my client smoked, she felt connected to her mother.

A good reason to smoke, right? (Though probably not something her mother would want for her daughter.)

Using hypnosis, the client came up with new ways to feel connected to her mom without needing to smoke. Happy ending: she’s been a nonsmoker going on 2 1/2 years.

Try This:

Think of some behavior or condition you want to change. Come up with a list of 10 reasons to keep doing the negative behavior or staying in the negative condition. This will help you consciously think about possible secondary gains.

Summer Fun

I hope everyone had a nice 4th of July. I spent some quality time with my family and we even made time for reflexology. I showed my parents some self-help techniques they can use when I’m not in town to give them a session. My 94-year-old grandfather even got involved, trying reflexology for the first time. It’s such an wonderful thing to share, and I really enjoyed connecting with them in this way.
